SEDATION

Our office is fully equipped to perform conscious sedation, reserving this procedure only for cases when it is absolutely necessary. Sedation relaxes our patients and eliminates anxiety, allowing us to complete complex dental procedures more easily. In addition, it allows dental treatment to be delivered in a safe environment by minimizing the potential of uncontrolled or undesirable movements on behalf of a child.

Our office uses two types of conscious sedation:

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide is administered to reduce pain and relieve mild anxiety, adding comfort for patients and allowing us to perform necessary dental procedures. Nitrous Oxide is safe for all ages, and dosages will be closely monitored by our Pediatric Dental Specialist, Dr. Mahal. Nitrous Oxide is inhaled through a mask, and its effect wear off quickly once it is removed.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation using Midazolam is a safe dental procedure for children, and our experienced team will monitor your child closely throughout the duration of the procedure. Children with mild to moderate anxiety toward dental treatment may benefit from oral sedation.

General Anesthetic

Dr. Mahal can perform dental procedures requiring general anesthetic at a private office off-site. General Anesthetics are usually recommended for children who need extensive dental treatment and are uncooperative, fearful, or very anxious. In addition, it is initiated for very young children who do not understand how to cope with dental treatment. Dr. Mahal works with Pediatric Dental Anesthesiologists from the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) at the Ottawa Surgicentre.
